Saahil Mehta, managing director of ResNet World and Brannon Winn, VP business development - EMEA at Sabre Hospitality Solutions, reviewed findings on two trends in the travel sector: smart phone penetration and the need for hotels to invest in Arabic websites.
Smartphone penetration is the highest in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and the Middle East and North Africa region with one-third of hotel bookings coming via tablets or smart phones.
In Saudi Arabia alone, half of the travel related enquiries come from mobile devices. In the GCC, half of the searches on desktops are done in Arabic and three-quarters of the searches on the smartphones are done in Arabic.
Many hoteliers in the region do not have Arabic websites or even if they do, they are not featuring a full-fledged Arabic booking engine. It follows that hotels risk driving the Arabic-speaking traveller to those competitors that do offer Arab content and mobile websites.
